Did you know that the church tower at Our Lady of the Lake has three bells of different sizes—large, medium, and small? In the early 2000s, a digital bell controller was installed to ring the bells on a specific schedule. Recently, the small bell stopped ringing properly, leading to the silencing of all the bells. To restore them to proper working order, we decided to upgrade the digital bell controller and replace the old wiring.
The Verdin Company™, a nationally known maker of bells and bell-ringing equipment, was hired to design a modern control system for the tower's bells. Dan Kupczyk, of Wire Right Electric, worked alongside maintenance staff and several parish volunteers to install the new digital controller and upgrade the necessary wiring. Once the new controller was installed, Dan Kupczyk collaborated with a Verdin technician to set up and program the system.
At 6:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 6:00 pm each day, the bells play the Angelus. The Angelus bell ringing is an invitation for all Christians to unite in prayer and goodwill. It consists of three repetitions of three strokes of the large bell, followed by a pause, for a total of nine strokes. After the nine strokes, all three bells ring randomly for approximately 45 seconds in a three-bell peal.
Additionally, five minutes before each Mass, the bells will play a three-bell peal for approximately 45 seconds. This traditional “call to worship” peal can be heard:
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dan Kupczyk, Wire Right Electric, and the team of volunteers who worked tirelessly to restore the beautiful ringing of the bells.
